The purpose of this lesson is to give the children various opportunities to construct knowledge about letters; both upper and lower case and their associated sounds. For the students that are past that level, we have the process of phoneme and all students will opportunities to work on their fine motor skills in the writing process. There are also various opportunities for beginner rhyming as well as established and advanced rhymers. The standards that are addressed in this lesson are ; Domain : Language and Literacy Strand : Reading Topic Phonological Awareness, Standard Statement: With modeling and support, recognize and produce rhyming words. Letter and word recognition Domain : Language and Literacy: Strand : Reading Topic : Letter and Word Recognition Standard Statement : With modeling and support, recognize and name some upper and lower case letters in addition to those in first name.

This is a teaching tool I plan to use as part of my lesson plan. The pictures in the power point will be aligned to card with the appropriate words on them. The students will match the words to the pictures, as well as the pictures that rhyme.

“Growing Up Online.”

I recently watched a video called “Growing Up Online” and it was based on high school students who were part of the internet explosion of the first social media MySpace. This video was done in 2008, years ago, however the explosion of the internet and the social interaction has not just exploded in numbers but as well as quality since then. I believe that the internet can be a useful tool if used correctly, however, just like everything else; there should be some sort of balance. I believe that parental support for their children’s independent internet use has decreased since 2012 because of the number of cyber bullying attacks. According to StopBullying.gov, “the 2013-2014 School Crime Supplement (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) indicates that 7% of students in grades 6–12 experienced cyberbullying. The 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey finds that 15% of high school students (grades 9-12) were electronically bullied in the past year. Research on cyberbullying is growing. However, because kids’ technology use changes rapidly, it is difficult to design surveys that accurately capture trends.” I believe that we as educators can motivate students to want to learn the materials given to them , and have them write their own responses if we give them various options to express their point of views. I believe that if students are given a chance to take ownership of their work using the latest technology out there, then they can be inclined to produce work of their own and not borrow from others. Using ideas like Infographics to create a paper from a student’s point of view would be a great incentive to get students to work instead of cheating and using someone else’s paper from online. I think that using other people’s words without citing it is definitely cheating and displays the integrity of said person. If students are taught this, and again, given the opportunity to have ownership of their w I believe that any student who relies on summaries and annotated notes on Web sites about any books given in class to read should feel guilty. It should be looked upon like cheating, because they are taking ideas from someone else who actually read the materials and summarized it according to their interpretation. When students don’t read assigned materials, there’s no way they can connect to the lesson being taught and even apply it to real life scenarios. I think that everyone that uses the internet uses it not just as a tool for information, but as a tool to to express themselves. It is used as a “continuum to their existence”. An existence that may be only available online verses in reality. At some point people get caught up with the amount of attention they may receive online and it gives them a sense of purpose and even a sense of being famous. I believe to be a celebrity , one has to be celebrated for a purpose, a positive purpose , not just because you may have a certain amount of fans, but maybe what you are doing and has done to make this world a better place. I believe that it’s the parents responsibility to make sure that they are aware of their children’s interactions online. Some students are not just using the internet to bullying others, but to also plan to physically hurt others and conspire with others to commit the crime. The following link tells of three teenagers who planned an attack on a fellow student, and there’s over 3000 pages of data to review surrounding the case that was planned online. The link is; http://www.delawareonline.com/story/news/crime/2016/05/09/doj-issues-warrants-3-teens-death-amy-joyner-francis/83866170/ According to Suler’s disinhibition effects, I believe that when someone is able to tease, lie, gossip, threaten, and spread rumors online to others without any concern of the consequences or the person’s feeling because they are not physically seeing that person this is called dissociative anonymity . Suler calls the dissociative anonymity where “the person doesn't have to take responsibility for those actions” I personally spend a lot of time online and I believe that if I am not aware of the time spent I can get carried away. I can easily disconnect from it all , when I am actually disciplined about it. Sometimes I am less conscious of it and I find that I miss actually being online. All together I can disconnect when I am on vacation and when I need to study.

Pinterest in the Classroom

I discovered various things from my exploration on Pinterest . Firstly ,this site is vast with tons of information according to topics. Some of which has to be broken into subtopics.

The information on Pinterest is like being in the ocean with beautiful colors around you for you to chose your destination . Every direction brings you to new and exciting paths that leads to new endeavors for exploration.

I believe as a Teacher Pinterest can be used to facilitate many needs such as collaboration of various lesson plans in different subject areas , ideas for classroom management and set -up, as well as strategies for teaching .

I think the strengths of Pinterest are many. It's visually appealing ,engaging , motivating and inspiring . I believe that some of the challenges of Pinterest are that there's a multitude of choices where a person can get over stimulated, with the mass amount of information available based on an unlimited amount of topics .

Overall , I am impressed with the quality of information on Pinterest . I believe that it will become a great value with teachers across the world to share various ideas ,topics and inspiration for free. This is a site I will be using to gain different perspectives , inspiration and sharing with my older students.

"Khan/Koller Review"

My impression of Khan Academy

I recently visited the site called Khan Academy and I was very impressed by the site itself. The site wasn’t just colorful, but simply easy to navigate. I liked the fact that the site used subjects and broke it down to various topics of that subject with appropriate videos. It was as easy as turning the pages of a book without effort. This site is truly driven by one’s desire to learn, if you want to learn anything about Math ( from K- 8 grade& High school) , Arts & Humanities , Economics & Finance ,  Computing & Science Engineering, it’s there.

I can see myself using this site not just for myself to brush up on some skills, but also with my students. Since our students are intrigued by technology, this is a wonderful site for them to explore topics like the Aztec Sun Stone or “What advice can Salman Khan give Lebron James” both of these great topics with engaging videos to watch and learn from .

 I believe that Salman Khan is right when he says that in the future ,we will rely more on “credentialing” through the use of online courses. More and people are relying on technology and it’s use, so to take advantage of learning from the safety and comfort of their homes. Especially students who may home schooled, sick or can’t handle  large groups of social interactions.

 

My impression of Coursera

 

When I explored the Coursera course offerings, I was very interested in their Language Learning course. I would like to explore the option of their online courses available.  I am not aware if Columbus State accepts Coursera transfer credits as I didn’t see their name, nor the names of the Universities the instructors  of  Coursera come from under the “Transfer & Articulation” section of the school website. However, with the growing population of people taking courses at Coursera, I wouldn’t be surprised that eventually credits from them  can be transferred to Columbus State.

The courses at Coursera appear to be more interesting than those I have taken or experienced before because of the 8-12 minutes interactive lessons. I also think because there’s that community of Global learners that can help with questions is forever evolving the learning experience. I wouldn’t say that my opinion of who is teaching at Coursera  has anything to do with my decision of maybe taking courses there, however , it’s the method of instruction that intrigues me.

I really believe that MOOCs ( massive open online courses) are the "wave of the future" because of the leaps and bounds we have with technology right now.  Eventually I believe that all teachers will need to know how to give engaging instruction online for all students because  that will become the norm of our society  

Exploring Standards-Based Lesson Plans

One of the lessons plans I found from the Ohio Department of Education site is called “Making a Career Choice”. This lesson plan is based on career assessments of the students, as well as their knowledge and abilities. The students range from grades 9-12. They are expected to choose an occupation  on the bias of Self-awareness and goal-setting . When they choose the topic, they are required to use the OhioMeansJobsK-12 and look up that specific occupation with the following considerations in mind; Interest areas, work setting, employer’s hiring practices, number of people employed (by area or state), wages, outlook, skills required, education required, courses in high school that are needed and knowledge.

The Common Core standards aligned to this lesson is English Language Arts and it is designed to meet the following objectives; Vocabulary , Reading Process, Reading Application, Non–fiction, Writing Process:, Use variety of strategies to revise content and organization; prepare writing for publication, Writing Application, Research, Formulate open-ended questions for investigation; evaluate usefulness of data; communicate findings and Communications. There are many ways to facilitate these objectives, some of which include having a class meeting to discuss the research found on the  web site, create a word wall of all the words that pertains to certain occupations, and write a journal pertaining to the findings of the career choice.

This lesson will be implemented by activating the student’s prior knowledge of careers they know about personally by either from their parents, grandparents and or other members of their families. The lesson will be introduced via a video to catch their attention and then the handouts will be passed around to facilitate the lesson , along with the worksheet.

For my inclusion practices , I would “1)Provide cue sheet with computer procedures.

2) Provide assistance in identifying the ten considerations of the occupation being researched.

3) Instead of a chart, have students make a presentation board that includes illustrations and a transcript of the courses the student took in school".

Assistive Technology to help students in the classroom that are Visual Impaired

The term Visually Impaired is used widely to explain when a person has either lost their sight entirely or a little. The functional definition is either low vision “also called moderate to severe visual impairment where a person have some vision, but they have difficulty accomplishing typical visual tasks.” The next definition is “blindness   (also called profound visual impairment) refers to having no vision or only light perception, or the ability to determine the presence or absence of light" (Huebner, 2000).  Students who are visually impaired are challenged not only with reading and writing, but with both social and emotional interactions. This occurs because typical developing students learn the traits of positive social & emotional behaviors from having the ability to look into the faces of others, and see the interactions exchanged, and or from trial and error. However, with visually impaired students, social interactions will have to be taught.

This is a personal FM assistive system where it’s a wireless transmitter that will enable the user to receive sound clear and precise.

This is an electronic magnifier, which is used for students who have moderate to severe visual impairment. Books, or pictures can be placed face down on the  black surface  , and students will be able to see an enlarged picture of whatever it is on the computer screen .

The  picture  below is a Braille Kindle which allows people to use and feel images and text on the screen .This is the future of assistive technology for the visually impaired. It is a new refresher Braille which will keep students up to date with events during real-time events.

Ohio Connections Academy ( OCA)

 I visited this site to look at information about enrollment and immediately the screen gave me the option of chatting with someone if  I  had a question. I personally liked this. The visuals on this website were very appealing and encouraging, as well as simple but in depth.  The site addressed all ages from K-12 and is accredited by AdvanceED .The look and feel of the environment on the website was inspiring because the different grades were broken down and clustered into 3 groups, with supporting lesson plans for each group. There was a FAQ page which answered question I had personally if I had to know before enrolling my child.

Virtual Community School of Ohio (VCS OHIO)

When I visited this site, the colors were simple and inviting. Upon clicking on their “How it works” button I came across the age groups  served and was amazed that each category of three groups answered FAQ  instead of displaying what subjects are taught and how are they connected to a lesson plan. While this was surprisingly different, I wanted more of an in depth explanation about the curriculum and couldn’t get a clear understanding when I looked it over under the “About Us  “ button. Personally there wasn’t a sense of cohesiveness in the website and that made me have a negative opinion of using this website to school my child.

Ohio Virtual Academy

I was very impressed by this website. The clarity and understandability of information was available, as well as in various other languages. The look and feel of the environment centered on giving any child an opportunity to receive an enriched education. Personally, I would pick this website over all the others because of the positive impact I see it could have not just on children and their plans, but as well as in  their futures.

This website was simple and straight to the point of what’s available for students and their parents. However, the clarity of the information is tricky   because a potential parent needs to search to find out information about the curriculum and other important information.  Under each category of buttons ,various topics are listed and some information are straight forward, as well as some of them makes your take a double look because of uncertainty .  I was very indecisive of endorsing this website, I think that I will have to do some more research before I give a clear opinion of it.

My Prezi is about a collection of aspects that makse me the person I am today.
I start with my background;including my origin and my education .Then I went on to explain why I have the love for reading as much as I do . I used the software Prezi to illustrate some aspects of my journey towards my goals. Initially , it was a bit tricky getting the frames to  link to each other , however ,after some exploration I was very intrigued by the software. I would be using this for my presentations instead of power points because it gives a wider option to add various sorts of media.

Hello Fellow Bloggers, my name is Sherryl Ann James and I am an administrator at a PreK Head Start program in Columbus Ohio . I have been teaching for the past 20 years and I have been an administrator for 5 years, two of those years  with Head Start . During the transition from teacher to administrator I  observed the frequency of children being mislabeled when they exhibited behaviors that teachers didn't understand and would call "bad". I wanted to understand why these behaviors were happening and what I can do to facilitate the needs of students with any type of behavior. This lead to my quest of studying to be an Intervention Specialist ,with endorsements of TESOL & Reading.  

When I am not busy working or studying , I am constantly reading various genres of books which I love because of it's ability to transport and  transform you to that particular place and time . I also enjoy cooking various types of cuisine, as well as traveling and working out. I love the outdoors, so most of my hobbies are done outside as much as possible.

My goal as an Intervention Specialist is to use my experiences with diversity as an advantage to bridge the gap that's  clearly visible when looking at the needs of the diverse population of children within our educational system. I would like to collaborate with families to meet their needs ,as well as the needs of  their children for a successful educational journey . One of the essential ways to do so in my field is to have a consistent knowledge of Technology , and the ways to engage my students in various ways.
